Volvo launches Polestar Engineered performance pack

Volvo has launched Polestar Engineered: a performance package designed to give a sporty edge to the Swedish brand’s lineup, setting the likes of the Audi S4 and BMW 340i M Sport in its sights.

The package will be applied to the T8 Twin Engine models - finding its way first onto the plug-in hybrid variant of the new S60, followed by the V60 and XC60. The changes encompass upgrades to the suspension, brakes and engine management system.

• £135k price tag confirmed for Polestar 1

The regular T8 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels supplemented by an electric motor at the back, giving a total of 385bhp. A revised ECU raises the total power output of the Polestar Engineered to 409bhp - at least in the US, though Volvo sources say that UK cars should be roughly the same. Torque is up 30Nm for a total of 670Nm.

The current V60 covers the 0-62mph dash in 5.1 seconds, but the extra power, combined with software changes to the automatic gearbox, should help Polestar Engineered versions dip under five - numbers which should put the Polestar roughly on par with the S4. Though no economy figures have been released, Volvo says that the changes have improved fuel efficiency, too.

The chassis has received attention, too. Borrowing tech from the Polestar 1 coupe, the suspension gains adjustable Ohlins dampers and a front strut brace. The brakes, meanwhile, are uprated courtesy of grooved brake discs and performance pads gripped by Brembo mono-block calipers. These, like the Ohlins dampers, are painted gold. The brakes are housed behind new lightweight alloy wheels.

Cosmetically, the Polestar Engineered variants get subtle Polestar badging and large tailpipes in a black chrome finish. Inside, the black sports seats are trimmed in a mixture of leather and fabric. They feature contrasting grey stitching and piping, while the occupants are held in place by gold-coloured seatbelts.
